Residents of Brokopondo have gained practical knowledge about sustainable agriculture, efficient water use and modern cultivation methods. The training was conducted on Tuesday, 25 August at Centrum Brokopondo by Junior Chamber International (JCI), in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (LVV).<\/p>\n
During the interactive session, participants received explanations on establishing, maintaining and making optimal use of agricultural plots. LVV expert Nitin Ramcharan addressed current challenges within agriculture and the importance of sustainable production methods.<\/p>\n
Much attention was given to the effects of climate change. Participants identified water availability, suitable irrigation systems and limited financial resources as major bottlenecks. According to the trainers, sustainable production requires not only sufficient water availability, but also ensuring that crops receive the right amount at the right time.<\/p>\n
Modern irrigation systems can help apply water more precisely and reduce waste. Hydroponics was also discussed. In this cultivation method, plants grow without traditional agricultural soil, allowing water, space and nutrients to be used more efficiently.<\/p>\n
The importance of healthy soil was also emphasized. According to the experts, crop rotation can contribute to maintaining soil fertility and achieving a better balance of nutrients.<\/p>\n
Participants were also introduced to circular agriculture. This involves reusing residual products from agriculture. Crop residues can, for example, serve as animal feed, while other organic material can be processed into compost and added to the soil.<\/p>\n
Biodiversity and natural pest control were also discussed. Some insects help control harmful pests, making farmers less dependent on chemical agents. In addition, buffer zones and proper planning of agricultural plots can protect crops from animals that cause damage.<\/p>\n
At the conclusion, LVV made vegetable seedlings available so that those present could apply the knowledge gained on their own agricultural plots. The activity was symbolically concluded with the planting of fruit trees at Ananistrand.<\/p>\n
