Eighteen artists bring together memories, stories and visions of the future of Suriname.

The exhibition was compiled by artist and curator Dhiradj Ramsamoedj. He drew inspiration from the line ‘Hoe wij hier ook samenkwamen…’ from the Surinamese national anthem. According to Ramsamoedj, this sentence refers to the sacrifices of earlier generations and the responsibility not to let their history and significance be lost.

Central are questions about the influence of the past on the present and how Surinamers can jointly shape the future. The selected artworks depict, among other things, memories, dreams and personal stories.

Themes such as Suriname’s cultural diversity, economic development and the vulnerability of nature are also addressed. The artists use a variety of styles, materials and perspectives to make these subjects visible.

With the exhibition, Readytex Art Gallery aims to invite visitors to view the past and present not separately, but as building blocks for a shared future. The exhibition ties in with the theme of MuseumN8 2026: ‘Roots & Route: Divided past, connected future’. As part of MuseumN8, the gallery will remain open on Saturday, October 17, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

‘Mapping the Unseen’ can be visited free of charge from September 5 through October 31, 2026, at Readytex Art Gallery, Steenbakkerijstraat 30.
