Everything must happen calmly and step by step,\u201d DNA (Suriname&#8217;s parliament) member <a href=\"https:\/\/keynews.sr\/en\/pawiroredjo-foreigners-find-work-while-200000-surinamese-need-social-assistance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jerrel Pawiroredjo<\/a> said recently on the radio programme <em>Retrospectie<\/em>. He warns that Suriname must handle the revenues that will result from the future oil industry carefully.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"dropcap \" style=\"background-color: #ffffff; color: #000000; border-color: #ffffff;\">A<\/span>ccording to Pawiroredjo, the oil industry will generate considerably more revenue for the state treasury than the bauxite industry did at the time, and possibly also more than the current gold sector. \u201cThe developments awaiting us are of a different order,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The DNA member believes that government leaders must prepare well for how future oil revenues will be handled. According to him, this should involve a deliberate examination of experiences in other oil-producing countries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are enough examples, such as Venezuela and Guyana,\u201d Pawiroredjo stated.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, Venezuela has very large oil reserves, but the country has been unable to benefit sufficiently from that wealth due to poor management. Guyana is approaching development differently in certain areas, according to him, but he also sees risks there.<\/p>\n<p>Pawiroredjo pointed, among other things, to the arrival of foreign experts in Guyana and the differences this has created in the labour market and in salaries, according to him.
