Confidence in the United Nations (UN) must be urgently restored. President Jennifer Simons stressed this on Tuesday, 22 September 2026, during her address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA<\/a>) in New York. According to the head of state, the next secretary-general must strongly commit to multilateralism, dialogue and the international legal order.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

S<\/span>imons noted that the UN is facing a change in its top leadership. Against that background, she considers it important that the new secretary-general is able to strengthen confidence in the organisation while at the same time adhering to the established mandates of the United Nations.<\/p>\n

At the start of her address, the president congratulated Khalilur Rahman of Bangladesh on the presidency of the 81st UNGA. She also expressed appreciation for his predecessor, Annalena Baerbock of Germany, for her leadership during the 80th session of the General Assembly.<\/p>\n

\u201cI express my appreciation for your predecessor and the manner in which she led the 80th session of the General Assembly, and I wish her every success in her future activities,\u201d Simons said.<\/p>\n

UN Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres also received recognition from the Surinamese head of state. His second term ends at the end of 2026. Simons praised his commitment to the international community and reflected on his previous visit to Suriname.<\/p>\n

\u201cSecretary-General, now that your term of office is drawing to a close, the Republic of Suriname commends your dedicated service to humanity during your tenure. We also warmly recall your visit to Suriname, through which you underscored the importance of the United Nations\u2019 involvement in our country and the Caribbean region,\u201d the president said.<\/p>\n

According to Simons, several candidates have now been put forward to succeed Guterres, including female candidates. She pointed out that, for the first time, a female candidate from the Caribbean has been put forward, supported by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are at a moment in history when confidence in the United Nations must be urgently restored,\u201d Simons stressed.<\/p>\n

According to the president, Suriname will continue to focus on strengthening Caribbean cooperation and promoting dialogue. At the same time, she called on influential UN member states to assume their responsibility in safeguarding international peace and security.<\/p>\n
