Two occupants were injured in a traffic accident on the Avobakaweg on Sunday afternoon. Near utility pole number PPOW 02, the car overturned and ended up in a ditch. According to police, the 24-year-old driver, M.R., did not have a valid Surinamese driving licence and stated that he had drunk beer before the trip.<\/p>\n
Police from Paranam went to the location following a report. Officers found a black passenger car lying on its roof in the ditch on the northern side of the road.<\/p>\n
M.R. stated that he was travelling from Paranam towards Powakka with three passengers. According to the driver, he lost control of the vehicle in a bend due to a road subsidence. While braking, the car left the road, ended up in the ditch and overturned.<\/p>\n
Two passengers, M.L. and 41-year-old J.G., complained of pain in the neck and left side, respectively. They were allowed to leave the medical facility after treatment. The third passenger was unharmed.<\/p>\n
During the police investigation, it emerged that M.R. did not have a valid Surinamese driving licence. He also stated that he had drunk beer before getting behind the wheel. Police did not report an alcohol test result.<\/p>\n
The car was impounded for re-inspection and towed away. The driver was brought before the authorities on Monday morning after sobering up. Following questioning and consultation with the Openbaar Ministerie (Public Prosecution Service), he was released.
