While the government assumes SRD 10.8 billion, the association, according to secretary Swami Girdharie, arrives at a deficit of more than SRD 16 billion based on its own calculations.

Girdharie told Radio ABC that the government estimate amounts to approximately 4 percent of gross domestic product (GDP). According to the VES, however, the deficit is around 6.3 percent of GDP. He calls the difference worrying and believes that government documents should be better aligned, so that it is clear which figures serve as the basis.

The association sees positive ambitions in the annual address of President Jennifer Simons, but lacks clarity on implementation. Financial management, the reform of state-owned enterprises and the fight against corruption in particular require concrete choices, according to the VES.

The proposed subsidy to Energiebedrijven Suriname (EBS, Suriname’s energy company) also raises questions. SRD 3.3 billion has been allocated for the company. According to Girdharie, this financial support must be accompanied by a clear plan to improve efficiency and implement reforms. “Providing so much subsidy to EBS again without a plan in return does not seem advisable to us,” he states.

In addition, the VES secretary warns of the weakening of state institutions through political appointments. According to him, experts are sometimes sidelined without there being demonstrable dysfunction. Presidential commissions and working groups can also delay work within ministries and existing institutions, Girdharie says.

Another point of criticism is, according to the VES, the absence of concrete attention to combating corruption in the annual address. Girdharie stresses that Suriname must better prepare for future revenues from the oil industry. Without good governance, he says, there is a risk that only a small group will benefit from the oil wealth, while a large part of the population remains in poverty.

Despite these concerns, the association sees opportunities for positive development. According to Girdharie, Suriname has sufficient potential, but harnessing it requires transparency, expertise and good governance. Changes in political and social behaviour are also necessary, he says.

The Vereniging van Economisten in Suriname warns that, according to its own calculations, the budget deficit for 2027 amounts to more than SRD 16 billion, considerably higher than the government’s estimate of SRD 10.8 billion.

{"facebook_29234516172805655_1309923202201307":"","facebook_29234516172805655_1158244960706604":"","facebook_29234516172805655_1093738170500407":"","facebook_29234516172805655_108923581283702":"
[16342
23636,21287,16291,20032,16292,23635
post-193451","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-economy","tag-budget-deficit","tag-economy","tag-key-news","tag-nieuws","tag-suriname","tag-ves
["GET
