According to Gajadien, poultry farmers have complained that the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (LVV) has taken measures without research results being available. Parmessar is particularly concerned about the lack of information provided to the public.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"dropcap \" style=\"background-color: #ffffff; color: #000000; border-color: #ffffff;\">G<\/span>ajadien recently stated during a meeting of De Nationale Assembl\u00e9e (DNA, Suriname&#8217;s parliament) that strict action in the event of a bird flu outbreak is necessary to protect public health. According to him, however, government measures must be based on legal provisions and scientifically substantiated research results. \u201cWe must not take liberties with the health of the public, but the state&#8217;s actions in the matter of the bird flu virus must be based on legal regulations,\u201d Gajadien emphasised.<\/p>\n<p>The parliamentarian indicated that several poultry farmers have lodged complaints about LVV&#8217;s actions. According to these entrepreneurs, measures were taken without the results of the investigation being known. Gajadien therefore wants the government to provide insight into the research results and the legal basis for the measures taken. \u201cThe government must provide clarity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<h2>Parmessar concerned about inadequate information provision<\/h2>\n<p>NDP parliamentary group leader Rabin Parmessar also called for greater openness from the government. According to him, there is uncertainty and concern among the population about the presence and possible spread of the bird flu virus. Parmessar believes that citizens are insufficiently informed about the areas where the virus has been detected and where they can safely buy poultry products. \u201cWhere does the virus occur? Where should chicken be bought? And much more information is lacking among the public,\u201d Parmessar said.<\/p>\n<p>According to the NDP parliamentary group leader, it is important for the government to communicate promptly and clearly about the situation, so that both consumers and poultry farmers know where they stand.
