DNA member Ebu Jones stated this on Tuesday during a meeting of De Nationale Assembl\u00e9e (DNA, Suriname&#8217;s parliament). He wants the government to provide clarity on the situation and take measures to protect those present.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"dropcap \" style=\"background-color: #ffffff;color: #000000;border-color: #ffffff\">A<\/span>ccording to Jones, police recently confiscated nineteen cylinders containing mercury at Stolkertsijver. The batch of mercury is reportedly currently stored at the Narcotics Department on the Nieuwe Haven premises. According to the parliamentarian, leakage has now occurred.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is leakage of confiscated m<a href=\"https:\/\/keynews.sr\/en\/public-prosecution-service-three-police-officers-denied-release-in-stolen-mercury-investigation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ercury<\/a> at Nieuwe Haven,\u201d Jones stated in parliament.<\/p>\n<p>The DNA member is concerned about the safety of both detainees and civil servants working at the location. Exposure to mercury, particularly mercury vapours, can have serious health consequences. Jones therefore wants to know what measures the government will take to protect those involved and prevent further risks.<\/p>\n<h3>Questions about mercury imports from Guyana<\/h3>\n<p>Jones also called attention to the mercury trade through neighbouring Guyana. According to him, the use of mercury is prohibited there, while its import is permitted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere do you think the imported mercury goes?\u201d, the parliamentarian asked rhetorically.<\/p>\n<p>Jones urges the Surinamese government to consult with the Guyanese authorities on this matter.
