The 24-year-old moped rider P.V.S. died on Saturday evening, October 31, 2026, from injuries sustained in a collision with a passenger car on Kwattaweg, near Tayerbladstraat. The 21-year-old driver M.G., who does not have a valid driving licence, was arrested by police and remanded in custody.

Police from Kwatta station received a report at approximately 7:58 p.m. on Saturday evening of a traffic accident involving a moped and a passenger car. Officers who went to the scene to investigate found the moped rider injured and unconscious.

Preliminary police investigations show that driver M.G. was travelling on Kwattaweg and turned right near Tayerbladstraat. In doing so, he allegedly failed to take sufficient account of oncoming traffic, resulting in the collision.

Moped rider dies in hospital

The victim was taken by ambulance to the Emergency Department of the Academisch Ziekenhuis Paramaribo (AZP). Shortly after arrival, the 24-year-old moped rider died from his injuries.

Driver was driving without a valid licence

During the inspection of the vehicle documents, police established that the 21-year-old driver did not possess a valid driving licence.

The driver was arrested and taken to the police station for arraignment. Following consultation with the Public Prosecution Service, he was remanded in custody pending further investigation.

The Verkeersunit Regio Midden is tasked with the further investigation into the circumstances of the fatal traffic accident.
