The Productive Work Units Foundation (SPWE) officially opened its fully renovated branch on Sinaasappelstraat on Friday, October 24, 2025. With the reopening, SPWE aims to support more entrepreneurs with workspaces, coaching, and training to encourage sustainable entrepreneurship.
SPWE, the operating arm of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Labour (VWA), offers workspaces and support to start-up and growing entrepreneurs. Because the building had fallen into disrepair and no longer met functional requirements, a thorough renovation was decided upon. The reopening took place in the presence of Deputy Minister Raj Jadnanansing (VWA).
Renovation possible through collaboration with CDB and BNTF
SPWE submitted a request for the renovation to the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB). The renovation was subsequently realized in collaboration with the Basic Needs Trust Fund (BNTF). According to project coordinator Simone Haridat, the renovated location will allow SPWE to better tailor its facilities and services to the needs of entrepreneurs.
Organization wants to professionalize and expand
SPWE celebrated its 50th anniversary on July 10, but according to Haridat, it faces structural challenges, such as limited staffing. “Additional staff is crucial,” she says, emphasizing the need for coaches and operations managers to sustainably strengthen the organization. The articles of association are also due for renewal and are undergoing legal revision. Furthermore, SPWE is developing a strategic policy, including transparent rental prices for the multifunctional hall. Consultations are underway with the Deputy Minister and the Supervisory Board regarding this professionalization initiative.
Focus on vulnerable groups and entrepreneurship
The foundation focuses on supporting vulnerable groups, including young people, young women, and people with disabilities. Through coaching and practical training, SPWE supports them in setting up and growing their businesses. “The goal is to develop SPWE into the leading platform for entrepreneurship, where talents are developed and income is generated for a better quality of life,” says Haridat.
