The Surinamese embassy in Brasília received a group of 52 primary school pupils on Friday, September 25. Through stories, visual materials and interactive activities, the children learned about Suriname’s cultural diversity.
During the visit, Surinamese traditions, dishes and folklore were discussed. Embassy staff also highlighted the message of unity by poet Dobru and swimming champion Anthony Nesty.
Through a film, the pupils saw images of the celebration of Phagwa, Marron Day, Chinese Immigration, the Day of Indigenous Peoples and Eid al-Fitr. The pupils were accompanied during the visit by their school leaders.
On behalf of the embassy, the programme was co-coordinated by first secretaries Ficenca Eliza and Jaya Faria-Jarvis. According to Ambassador Ike Antonius, the visit contributes to long-term contacts with educational institutions in Brasília.
Later this year, Suriname will be the focus of the annual country festival for lower-grade pupils at an educational institution in the Brazilian capital. Pupils will pay attention to Surinamese music, art and dishes, among other things.
