DNA member Hakiem Lalmohamed wants heavily loaded trucks to use the Jules Wijdenbosch Bridge only between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. If trucks have to cross the bridge during the day, this should be done under police escort, according to him. He believes that the government is taking insufficient account of traffic safety on the bridge.

Speaking to TBN Prime Alert, Lalmohamed expressed concern that heavily loaded trucks cross the bridge at virtually any time of day, without police escort. According to him, this situation poses risks to other road users.

The parliamentarian referred to the serious traffic accident in December 2021, in which a truck carrying logs rammed several vehicles while descending from the bridge. The truck’s brakes failed. One person died in the accident.

“The government has probably forgotten what happened on the bridge in 2021,” Lalmohamed said. According to him, the accident made a deep impression on society at the time. “I think the government is suffering from memory loss, because that was a severe blow to the entire society.”

Previously introduced measures

Lalmohamed knows that measures were taken after the accident to regulate heavy freight traffic on the bridge. According to him, heavily loaded trucks were only allowed to make the crossing during certain evening and night-time hours, or they had to be escorted by the police.

The DNA member wonders why these measures are no longer being applied. “Why are these measures no longer being applied?” he asked. He wants the government to reintroduce the previous safety regulations. “The trucks must make the crossing from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., or during the day, but then under police escort,” he stressed.

Breakdown of truck causes traffic congestion
Lalmohamed’s concerns have been reignited by a recent incident in which a heavily loaded truck broke down on the Wijdenbosch Bridge. According to the parliamentarian, it involved a truck belonging to a well-known businessman. The incident caused major traffic congestion and, according to him, led to frustration and fear among road users.

Lalmohamed believes the authorities should not wait until another serious accident occurs. He is calling for preventive measures to ensure safety on the bridge. “Society must be protected,” the parliamentarian said.
