Police from the Paranam station arrested 24-year-old B.R.E. on suspicion of assaulting his stepfather and brother-in-law. Both victims were injured and, after treatment at the Medische Zending (Medical Mission) in Powakka, were referred to the Emergency Department.
According to police, the suspect had been drinking alcohol on Sunday evening and an argument arose while cooking with his 42-year-old stepfather. The stepfather allegedly confronted him because he had been taking too long to cook. The suspect then allegedly struck his stepfather on the back with the flat side of a machete. He then allegedly punched him below the left eye.
A brother-in-law who witnessed the incident confronted the suspect about his behaviour. B.R.E. then allegedly grabbed a piece of wood and struck his brother-in-law near the left temple. Both victims sustained visible injuries. Nurses at the Medische Zending in Powakka treated them and subsequently referred them to the Emergency Department.
Police arrested B.R.E. The following morning, after he had sobered up, he was arraigned and remanded in custody. The machete and the piece of wood were seized. Bureau Paranam is continuing the investigation.
