During a routine police check at the Burnside checkpoint, the 30-year-old driver I.B. was arrested on the morning of Saturday, October 3. Police found thirty bags containing approximately 850 kilograms of copper pipes, power cables and air-conditioning lines in his vehicle.
The bags were in the boot and on the back seat of the vehicle. The driver stated that he had bought the goods in Nickerie, but was unable to produce a proof of purchase or receipt.
According to police, further investigation showed that the copper shipment had been smuggled from Guyana into Suriname.
Following consultation with the Public Prosecution Service, I.B. was remanded in custody. Police seized both the shipment and the vehicle. The investigation is ongoing.
