According to the minister of Education, Science and Culture, the social and financial appreciation for teachers has not yet reached the level it should. The minister acknowledged this in his message on the eve of the 2026-2027 school year.

The minister expressed his appreciation for teachers and school leaders and stressed that they play an important role in the development of children and young people.

“Your work goes far beyond imparting knowledge. You inspire, guide, motivate and shape young people into responsible citizens,” he said.

According to the minister, “the most precious asset of our society” is entrusted daily to the care of teachers: the children of Suriname.

At the same time, he indicated that he is aware that the social and financial appreciation for the work of educators still needs improvement.

According to him, the government considers education to be one of the most important investments in Suriname’s future. Good education is essential, according to the minister, for equal opportunities, economic development and social progress.

He thanked teachers for their commitment, patience and dedication and wished them success throughout the new school year.

The government has previously indicated that it wants to work towards improving the position and working conditions of educators. However, in his message, the minister did not announce any concrete new financial measures.

The business sector was also called upon to play a greater role in education. According to the minister, companies can contribute through internships, guest lectures, practical experience and support for educational projects, among other things.

According to the minister, good education is not solely a responsibility of the government. Schools, families, the business sector and society must jointly contribute to the development of young people and, in doing so, to Suriname’s future.
