The Ministry of Education, Science and Culture (MinOWC) is working together with the Ministry of Social Affairs and Housing (SOZAVO) on a project to minimise early school leaving among secondary school students. Minister Dirk Currie recently announced this on ABC Actueel.

According to Currie, figures show that there is a relatively high dropout rate among boys from secondary education onwards. As a result, many more boys leave secondary schools. “This is a matter of concern for us.” It has emerged that boys leave school due to economic circumstances and choose to go to work.

“We are working to find solutions for this,” the minister said. MinOWC is working with the Ministry of SOZAVO to examine how this can be addressed. Both ministries are also working on a project aimed at making an amount of EUR 300,000 available.

Currie said the amount will be spent on such boys. “Consideration will be given to how the ministry can support these young people so that they remain in school.”
