“We need to find ways to support young footballers,” national coach Henk Fraser of the Suriname men’s national football team said on Tuesday during the press conference ahead of the Nations League match against Honduras.
Fraser announced that he will remain in Suriname somewhat longer after this FIFA period because he wants to watch matches in the Suriname Major League. He believes in the potential and qualities of the young Surinamese players.
The national coach acknowledges that the Surinamese players still need to develop and catch up, but the gap in quality compared with the foreign-based players is not too great. He hopes that he can train the Surinamese players or give them minutes in matches, because only then will the players be able to take the next step in their careers.
Fraser pointed out that Suriname must find a way to support young footballers. “An example of how Morocco has done it.” According to him, Suriname has sufficient quality; money now only needs to be made available and invested in young people.
The national coach hopes that, in cooperation with the parties involved, he can draw up a plan to develop young Surinamese footballers. He considers being national coach fantastic, but he wants to mean much more for Surinamese football.
