Suriname on Thursday, 1 October, handed over 55.45 tonnes of rice to Venezuela. The humanitarian aid is intended for the population affected by the two earthquakes of 24 June and is meant to contribute to recovery.
The handover took place at the port of La Guaira. The rice was transported in two 20-foot containers and handed over by Suriname’s ambassador to Venezuela, Georgette García Elías.
On behalf of Venezuela, Gustavo Díaz Aular, director-general at the office of the vice-minister for the Caribbean of Venezuela’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Admiral José Rafael Hernández Abchi received the shipment.
On behalf of President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, García Elías stressed that Suriname wishes to demonstrate its solidarity with the Venezuelan population through the donation. According to the ambassador, the contribution also reflects the bonds of friendship between the two countries.
This is the second humanitarian aid shipment Suriname has delivered to Venezuela since the earthquakes. The first shipment was transported by air in August.
