Three people were injured in a collision on the Bouterse Highway, near the Avobakaweg, on Sunday morning.

A Toyota Vitz left the road, collided with an electricity pole and came to a stop on its side. The 18-year-old driver, L.D., who did not have a valid driving licence, has been detained.

Police received a report of the traffic accident through the Command Center in the early morning. Officers found a grey Toyota Vitz on its side in the roadside verge at the scene. Three injured persons were near the vehicle.

According to the preliminary police investigation, L.D. lost control of the steering wheel near the Avobakaweg. The car subsequently left the road and collided with an electricity pole, after which the vehicle came to a stop several metres further on.

The two passengers were taken by ambulance to the Emergency Department of the Academisch Ziekenhuis Paramaribo. Both were admitted due to their injuries. One of them has since been discharged from hospital.

The car has been seized pending the investigation for re-inspection and was removed by a towing service. Police in Paranam are continuing the investigation.
