The Ministry of Regional Development (RO) is organising various activities from September 18 to October 10, 2026, in the run-up to the national commemoration and celebration of the Day of the Maroons. The programme is being held under the theme ‘Maroon Legacy Wi Rutu’ (“Maroon Legacy, Our Roots”).
The activities will begin on Friday, September 18, with a lecture and panel discussion on the development of the interior. Attention will also be paid to the rich Maroon culture and the importance of preserving and passing on cultural traditions. The gathering will take place at the Congreshal. Doors open at 6.30 p.m., with the panel discussion beginning at 7 p.m.
The ‘Legacy Maroon’ fair is scheduled for Friday, October 3, and Saturday, October 4, at Roelie’s Event Venue. Visitors will be able to learn about various aspects of Maroon culture, including traditional food, clothing, cosmetics, dance and agricultural products.
The activities will conclude on October 10 with a wreath-laying ceremony at the monument on Plein van 10 Oktober. Later that day, the Day of the Maroons will be celebrated with performances by traditional groups and music formations.
Through the programme, the ministry aims to highlight the cultural heritage of Maroon communities and emphasise the importance of cultural preservation and knowledge transfer.
