Regional West Detectives have seized 171 boxes of powdered milk in Nickerie, believed to have been smuggled into the country from Guyana. Two suspects, including a police officer, have been arrested in connection with the case.

The investigation was launched after police received information about a possible smuggled shipment originating from Guyana. Detectives subsequently conducted an investigation at a warehouse on the Rambaran Mishreweg in Nickerie.

A white Toyota Noah containing 171 boxes of powdered milk was found in the warehouse. Both the shipment of powdered milk and the vehicle were seized by police.

The suspects B.A., alias ‘Tale’, who works as a police officer, and F.S., alias ‘Kopro’, were arrested. Following consultation with the Public Prosecution Service, both men were remanded in custody.

The case has been transferred to the Fraud and Economic Offences Department (FED) for further investigation. Police are investigating, among other things, the origin of the goods and the circumstances under which the shipment of powdered milk was brought into Suriname.

The investigation is ongoing.
