The redevelopment of Domineestraat between Neumanpad and Steenbakkerijstraat is expected to be completed by mid-November. Work is currently under way on the pavements. The road will then receive a second asphalt layer, after which road markings and traffic signs will be installed.
Vikash Moenna, deputy director of Dry Civil Engineering Works at the Ministry of Public Works and Spatial Planning (OWRO), told the Communicatie Dienst Suriname (CDS).
Work on the pavement on the northern side has been completed. According to Moenna, about 60 to 70 per cent of the southern side is finished. The ministry expects to complete the paving of the pavements by the end of October or, at the latest, in the first week of November.
The project began on 3 August. The first asphalt layer was applied in the third week of August. Once the pavements have been fully paved, the top layer of the road surface will follow. Traffic facilities will then be installed, after which the initial handover will take place.
According to Moenna, the redevelopment was necessary because of the poor condition of the road surface, pavements and sewerage system. During the works, the old asphalt layer and existing sewerage were removed. The road foundation was built up after the sewerage system was replaced.
Temporary traffic signs have been installed to guide traffic during the works. Arrangements have also been made to provide pedestrians with safe access to the pavements.
The works are causing some inconvenience for businesses in the area. According to Moenna, they have shown understanding for the situation. He stressed that the renewed layout should ultimately also benefit the businesses.
