Former Minister of Finance and Planning Armand Achaibersing is standing as a candidate for the chairmanship of the Vooruitstrevende Hervormings Partij (VHP). He confirmed his candidacy to Tra Fas’ De. The executive board elections must be held by May 2027 at the latest.
With his announcement, Achaibersing joins the names being mentioned within the party for the chairmanship. It is not yet known what course he wants to take with the VHP and with which team he wants to contest the elections.
Before becoming a minister, Achaibersing was active in the insurance sector. He held, among other positions, the posts of managing director of Assuria and chairman of the Surinaamse Vereniging van Assurantiemaatschappijen.
The elections are taking place during a period of change for the VHP. Following the death of party chairman and former president Chandrikapersad Santokhi on March 30, 2026, party leadership passed to Glenn Oehlers. The upcoming board elections are expected to clarify who will lead the party going forward.
Asiskumar Gajadien and Ganeshkoemar Kandhai are also being mentioned within the VHP as possible successors. Parliamentarian Mahinder Jogi previously expressed his preference for Kandhai and criticised a possible chairmanship by Gajadien. The name of Cedric van Samson has also been mentioned, although he himself has not announced his candidacy.
