Construction of 350 social housing units was officially launched in Reeberg on Monday, October 12. According to Minister Stephen Tsang of Openbare Werken en Ruimtelijke Ordening, the homes must be completed within two years. The project is a donation from the Chinese government and the Chinese people to Suriname and is intended for socially vulnerable households.

President Jennifer Simons and Minister Tsang launched the construction work. After construction, the contractor will remain responsible for maintenance for another two years. This gives the project a total duration of four years.

Tsang stressed that the homes must contribute to the security of livelihood of households that need support. “What you want to give people, in any case, is a roof over their heads,” the minister said.

Simons thanked China for the support and pointed to the great need for affordable housing in Suriname. According to the president, the government is working on various housing programmes and financing options to give more citizens access to a home of their own.

SRD 250 million has been allocated to the Woningbouwfonds in 2026. The fund provides mortgage loans at favourable interest rates. In addition, the government prepares land for construction and provides facilities such as electricity, water, internet and access roads. This approach should limit construction costs for citizens.

The president called on citizens to follow information from the Nationaal Huisvestingsprogramma Suriname (NaHuSur) to determine what opportunities are available to qualify for a home. She referred in this regard to financing options with interest rates of three, five and seven percent.

According to Simons, the project in Reeberg also offers opportunities for local workers to gain knowledge and experience. She encouraged people who can contribute to the construction to register and make use of that opportunity.

Council adviser Faizal Abdoelgafoer stated that the president aims for a mix of residents from different social and socioeconomic groups in housing projects. This should ensure that residential neighbourhoods reflect the diversity of Surinamese society.
