NPS parliamentarian Poetini Atompai denies that he is pursuing his own agenda or following his own course within the party. On the programme ABC Actueel, he recently stressed that he feels at home in the NPS and is not considering leaving. “I am still working with our election manifesto in hand.”
According to Atompai, his connection to the party is not in question. “The NPS belongs to us; one person may feel more like an NPS member and another less so, but I feel at home in the NPS.”
The parliamentarian did state, however, that some people within the party are dissatisfied with their position because they did not obtain the desired number of votes. “People who would have liked to speak louder did not get the votes to be where we are today and will also not be able to bring in the votes in 2030.”
According to Atompai, election results determine the position politicians can take. He described this as the harsh reality. “Politics is about numbers; you can talk as much as you want. But reality will emerge on 25 and 26 May.”
No ambition for party chairmanship
Atompai also addressed criticism from people who, before the elections, regarded him as an infiltrator within the NPS. He denies that he wanted to steer the party in a different direction and says he follows the party leadership.
According to Atompai, party chairman Gregory Rusland has indicated that this is his final term as chairman. The parliamentarian himself says he has no ambition to take over that position. “I will never fight for the position.” According to him, it is up to party members to determine the future of the NPS.
Atompai reiterated that he feels at home in the party. Should that change, he says he will leave the NPS.
