The Surinaamse Partij van de Arbeid (SPA) has congratulated the Nationale Partij Suriname (NPS) on its 80th anniversary. The NPS was founded on 29 September 1946. According to the SPA, the party’s history is closely linked to Suriname’s constitutional and democratic development.
In a congratulatory message, the SPA points to the role the NPS has played over the past decades from both government and opposition. The party mentions, among other things, Suriname’s independence and the restoration of the democratic rule of law.
The SPA also reflects on the cooperation between the two parties. From 1991, they were part of the Nieuw Front voor Democratie en Ontwikkeling and jointly bore governmental responsibility. According to the SPA, the parties also worked together again at a later stage.
The NPS anniversary theme, ‘A bridge between 80 years of history and the next generation’, touches on a broader task, according to the SPA: passing on democratic values and involving young people in Suriname’s future.
“Political parties may differ in opinion and bear responsibility from different positions, but ultimately the interests of Suriname and its population must be central,” the SPA writes. The party wishes the NPS leadership, members and supporters wisdom and strength.
