NPS parliamentarian Poetini Atompai believes it has now become clear which ministers are capable of carrying out their duties. In ABC Actueel, he recently criticised the implementation of government policy. According to him, certain matters are progressing so sluggishly that society still sees no change.
“It is now more than clear who can do the work and who is not up to it,” Atompai said. According to him, Suriname does not lack plans, but implementation is deficient. “People do not implement.”
The parliamentarian expects President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons to intervene. People who do not want to work or are unable to work should, according to him, make way for people who are capable of doing the job.
“We do not have a money problem in Suriname. The problem is that many people in positions do not have the capacity to do the work,” he stated.
As an example, Atompai mentioned government services that, according to him, can be digitised. This is not happening, he said, “because certain people want to remain important.”
The expected billions in revenue from the oil sector will also not solve this problem, according to the NPS member. “We need the right people in the right places.”
Departure as committee chairman
Atompai also addressed his decision to step down as chairman of the standing Education committee in De Nationale Assemblée (Suriname’s parliament) (DNA). According to him, there was a lack of political will to address certain matters.
“Perhaps if another person fills this position, there will be political will and support,” he said.
According to Atompai, he has received insufficient support over the past fifteen to eighteen months. This was reason for him to step down as chairman. He will remain a member of the committee and will continue his work from that position.
