The Marowijne Noord-Oost district commissioner’s office is introducing a new household waste collection system. From 1 November 2026, the garbage truck will collect only household waste presented in the district commissioner’s official red garbage bags. The sales proceeds are intended to help cover waste management costs.
According to the district commissioner’s office, waste management is currently the district’s largest expenditure item. The removal of household waste, litter and commercial waste costs approximately SRD 500,000 per month. Through the sale of the special garbage bags, the district commissioner’s office aims to support the district fund and finance the collection and disposal of waste.
The project is being introduced under the slogan ‘A sani o gwa lebi!’ (Things will be fine!). Since Thursday, 1 October, shopkeepers have been called on to sell the official red bags. According to the district commissioner’s office, these are now available at businesses in Albina and the surrounding area.
District Commissioner Marvin Vijent is asking residents to cooperate with the new system. “Keeping our district clean is a responsibility we must bear together,” he says. According to Vijent, by purchasing the bags, residents contribute directly to a cleaner and healthier living environment.
The district commissioner’s office emphasises that the sales are not intended to make a profit. The proceeds are intended for the collection and disposal of waste. The district commissioner’s office also states that the red bags are sturdier and cheaper than the usual black garbage bags. No sale price was stated in the announcement.
The appeal is aimed at the communities of Albina, Moengo Tapu and Galibi. Residents are asked from now on to use only the official red garbage bags to put out their household waste.
