ABOP chairman Ronnie Brunswijk has brought a boy from Kwamalasamutu to Paramaribo to offer him the opportunity to continue his education. According to Brunswijk, many children in remote villages in southern Suriname have insufficient opportunities to continue studying after completing primary education.

Brunswijk told TBN that during his visit to Kwamalasamutu, he was confronted with the situation of children who have successfully completed grade nine but have no opportunity to continue their education elsewhere.

According to him, some parents do not have the financial means to accommodate their children in Paramaribo. There are also often no family members with whom the children can stay.

Accommodation and school arranged

Brunswijk decided to personally help one of the boys. He said he arranged a school for him and ensured that the boy can stay in Paramaribo.

The pupil has since arrived in the capital and, according to Brunswijk, is staying with his mother.

The ABOP chairman indicated that he wants to continue supporting the boy during his school years.

According to him, the pupil should be given the opportunity to complete his education and possibly continue to university.

Call to government

Brunswijk believes that the government should pay more attention to the position of pupils from the interior.

He pointed out that in various villages there are children who have successfully completed their school year but cannot pursue further education because of financial and practical problems.

According to him, these children must not be left to fend for themselves.

The politician therefore calls on the government and the responsible education authorities to create opportunities for housing and further education for pupils from remote areas.

Brunswijk stressed that the contribution these children may later make to Surinamese society must not be underestimated.
