The government has established a committee tasked with addressing backlogs in the formalisation of promotions within the corps that fall under the Ministry of Justice and Security.
The Commissie Rechtspositionele Aangelegenheden (Committee on Legal Status Matters) was officially established on Monday, 26 October 2026, at the police headquarters on Duisburglaan, in the presence of police chief Melvin Pinas.
The establishment of the committee follows an instruction by President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons. Its purpose is to clear the accumulated backlogs in formally recording promotions and the associated resolutions of personnel within the various corps.
In addition to catching up on these backlogs, the committee must map out the existing promotion process. This will include examining which administrative and procedural bottlenecks hinder the timely processing of promotions.
Based on its findings, the committee will advise the Minister of Justice and Security on possible simplifications and improvements to the procedures. It must also put forward concrete solutions to prevent backlogs from arising again in the future.
The committee was established retroactively from 1 July 2026 and has a term of one year. During this period, it must contribute to more efficient handling of legal status matters concerning personnel within the corps involved.
The size of the current backlog and the number of personnel awaiting the formalisation of their promotion have not been disclosed.
