The Culturele Unie Suriname (CUS) paused on Sunday, September 27, to reflect on the life and significance of Janey Tetary. The commemoration began with a floral tribute at her monument. Later in the evening, a film about her life and history was screened.
Prior to the film, guest speaker Fazle Shairmahomed placed Tetary’s life story in a broader historical context. The chair of NAKS, Ms Staphorst, and DNA chair Ashwin Adhin also addressed those present. Staphorst discussed the role of women in history and in present-day society. Adhin reflected on the circumstances of indentured labourers and Tetary’s place in that history.
According to the CUS, Tetary symbolises courage, dignity and standing up for others. With the commemoration, the organisation aims to pass on her story to future generations and keep the conversation about Surinamese history alive.
“Commemoration is not only about looking back; it is about taking responsibility into tomorrow,” said the CUS chair. The organisation hopes that the film evening will also give rise to discussion and awareness afterwards.
