The Youth Affairs Police arrested 65-year-old R.Y. on Monday, September 21, on suspicion of prolonged sexual abuse of his 15-year-old granddaughter. The man was arrested at a medical institution where he was receiving treatment.
According to the preliminary police investigation, the abuse is believed to have lasted about two years. Since her mother’s death last year, the girl had been living with her younger brother and sisters at her grandfather’s home.
The case came to light after the girl attempted suicide. She was subsequently admitted to hospital for observation and is receiving medical and social support. The girl had also confided her situation to an acquaintance of her late mother. This person contacted the police.
Following consultation with the Public Prosecution Service, R.Y. was remanded in custody. The investigation is ongoing.
