During a routine police check in Klaaskreek in the Brokopondo district, a revolver, 33 live rounds and an amount of raw gold were found in a Toyota Vitz. The driver, J.J., attempted to flee but was arrested shortly afterwards. He has been remanded in custody.
Members of the Regio Bijstand Team Midden (RBTM) and Surveillance Midden (SRM) found an Amadeo Rossi & CIA revolver, the ammunition and the gold during the check.
When J.J. realised he was about to be arrested, he ran away. Police caught up with him several dozen metres away and arrested him nonetheless.
The suspect told police that he had bought the firearm in Paramaribo to protect himself. According to police, further investigation showed that he illegally possessed the raw gold.
Following his arraignment, J.J. was remanded in custody on suspicion of violating the Firearms Act and the Economic Offences Act. The firearm, the rounds and the gold were seized for criminal proceedings.
The suspect was handed over to the Brokopondo Centrum police, who are continuing the investigation.
