The German parliamentary delegation currently visiting Suriname is advocating for a diplomatic representation specifically focused on Suriname and Guyana. According to delegation leader Gregor Gysi, this could strengthen cooperation with both countries.
Also discussed on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, during a meeting with President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons were the easing of visa procedures, economic cooperation and investment opportunities in the oil and gas sector.
The German delegation was received by the head of state at the Kabinet van de President. The talks focused on bilateral relations between Suriname and Germany, with particular attention to trade, investment, climate change and developments in the energy sector.
During the visit, Gysi proposed that Germany establish an embassy specifically responsible for Suriname and Guyana. At present, diplomatic relations with both countries are maintained through the German embassy in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. This diplomatic mission is responsible for ten countries and territories.
Easing visa procedures
Another important topic of discussion was access for Surinamese travellers to Germany and other European Union countries. According to Gysi, improvement of the existing visa procedures is necessary. He pointed to the need for simpler application procedures and broader opportunities to obtain multiple-entry visas.
“We will, within our capabilities, make efforts to improve this situation,” the German delegation leader stated.
German investments in Suriname
Miriam Mac Intosh, director of Foreign Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Cooperation (BIS), stressed that Suriname and Germany have maintained diplomatic relations since 1978.
According to her, the existing relationship offers opportunities to further expand economic cooperation. Among other things, discussions were held on opportunities for German companies, including small and medium-sized enterprises, to undertake activities in Suriname.
Mac Intosh indicated that Germany sees opportunities to invest in Suriname on the basis of equality and sustainability. Support with climate-related issues is also among the possible areas of cooperation.
Oil and gas sector and illegal gold mining
Expected developments in Suriname’s oil and gas sector were also discussed. Gysi sees favourable prospects in this for further cooperation between the two countries.
The issue of illegal gold mining was also addressed. Attention was paid to the environmental damage associated with these activities and to possible measures to tackle the problem.
The visit to Suriname is part of a regional trip by the German parliamentary delegation, which will also visit Panama and Guyana. In the three countries, the delegation is exploring opportunities to deepen existing relations and develop new forms of cooperation.
