The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (LVV) is working on a strategic plan to make better use of international cooperation for the development of the agricultural sector. The approach is intended to clarify existing agreements and convert international relations into concrete projects, knowledge exchange, technical support and investments.
A key component of the plan is a central database containing international contacts, partners, projects and cooperation agreements. Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) will also be included. Through this, the ministry aims to better track which collaborations yield results and where adjustments are needed.
LVV will assess existing agreements for their currency, relevance and added value. In addition, the ministry wants to expand and deepen relations with other countries, international organisations and strategic partners.
According to Emanuel Enjoem, policy adviser and coordinator of International Relations at LVV, international cooperation should be given a clearer place within the ministry’s policy.
“It is not only about maintaining relations, but above all about achieving concrete results,” Enjoem says. “By properly evaluating existing collaborations, better monitoring agreements and entering into new strategic partnerships, we can deploy international cooperation more purposefully for the development of our agriculture, livestock farming and fisheries.”
Enjoem stresses that international relations only add value when they lead to concrete cooperation, knowledge and resources for Suriname. With the plan, LVV wants to bring greater coherence to its international activities and strengthen the position of Surinamese agriculture, livestock farming and fisheries.
