Minister Bee confirms mercury leak at Nieuwe Haven
Minister Marinus Bee, who is currently serving as acting Minister of Justice and Security, confirmed in parliament on Thursday that there is a mercury leak at Nieuwe Haven. “There is indeed a mercury leak,” the minister said.
Bee said that after the leak was discovered at the Narcotics Department, the police leadership immediately took action. Various measurements were carried out by the Nationale Milieu Autoriteit (National Environmental Authority), and the report is now awaited, but pending the report it was decided to close off the room and remove the staff from it. It was also advised that the seized mercury be stored at another location. According to Bee, alternatives are now being considered for storing the mercury. Discussions are under way with multinationals and other companies in this regard, but no concrete solutions have been reached so far. It has also been proposed to store the mercury in the container again under strict security. “We will continue searching for another sustainable solution.”
DNA member Ebu Jones earlier stated that police recently seized nineteen cylinders of mercury at Stolkertsijver. The mercury was placed at the Narcotics Department at Nieuwe Haven, but at one point a leak began. He asked whether the detainees and civil servants working at Nieuwe Haven are safe.
