Screenshot 2026 10 10 201855 The NDP emphasises that recognition of the Maroon community must be reflected in equal opportunities in education, the economy and social participation, as an essential part of Surinamese national unity and progress.

The Nationale Democratische Partij (NDP) is calling attention to equal opportunities and the social position of the Maroon community on the occasion of Day of the Maroons. According to the party, recognition of the historic struggle for freedom only gains meaning when it also leads to concrete results in education, economic opportunities and social participation.

In its October 10 message, the NDP honours the courage, resilience and legacy of Maroon ancestors. The party calls their struggle for freedom, dignity and self-reliance an important chapter in Suriname’s national history.

The NDP stresses that the Maroon community forms an indispensable part of society. Its contribution to, among other things, culture, the economy and the development of communities deserves appreciation throughout the year, according to the party. The traditions, knowledge and life experiences of the Maroon people are also mentioned as valuable components of Surinamese identity.

“True recognition only gains meaning when it is also reflected in equal opportunities, concrete results and respect for the rights and dignity of every person,” the party writes.

The NDP points to challenges surrounding access to education, knowledge and economic opportunities. According to the party, the development of the Maroon community is inextricably linked to the progress of Suriname as a whole. When part of the population is left behind, it is, in its view, a shared responsibility to seek solutions.

In the statement, the party also emphasises national unity. According to the NDP, commemorating the history of one population group strengthens the shared national history. Diversity should serve as a basis for cooperation and solidarity.

For young people, the party calls for attention to both the transmission of traditions and cultural values and opportunities to develop their talents. According to the NDP, children should not only learn about the struggle of their ancestors, but also be equipped to contribute to the country’s future themselves.

“Freedom was the legacy of our ancestors. Equal opportunities, national unity and sustainable progress are our shared responsibility,” the NDP said.
