Residents of Huize Ashiana, Gouden Jaren and Huize Albertine took part in a seniors’ day at the RCR Zorghotel in Paramaribo on Friday, 9 October. The programme consisted of health checks, shared meals, group singing and a musical performance. The participants also received a health card enabling them to have their blood pressure and blood sugar measured free of charge at the Zorghotel from now on.
The day began with the reception of the seniors and checks by the medical team. In addition to measuring blood pressure and blood sugar levels, attention was paid to their general health. According to the organisation, the health card should contribute to sustained attention to preventive care.
After the checks, the participants were served breakfast on the terrace. Lunch, fruit and other refreshments were also offered during the day.
Sharing memories
Pastor Guno Emanuelson delivered a morning blessing, preceded by group singing with those present. During the Fos ten tori (stories from earlier times) programme segment, the seniors recalled memories and spoke with one another and staff about life in the past.
In the afternoon, Tunny Vervuurt and his musical accompaniment gave a two-hour performance. Participants were able to sing and dance along.
Upon departure, the seniors received a gift package. The three care homes also received a food package as support for the institutions that care for the elderly on a daily basis.
Attention to the well-being of the elderly
According to the RCR Zorghotel, the seniors’ day is among its recurring social activities. The organisation aims to draw attention to both the health and social well-being of the elderly.
The Zorghotel emphasises that good elderly care includes not only medical support, but also personal attention, social contacts and room for relaxation.
