Suriname and Morocco have discussed further cooperation in the areas of agriculture and education. The supply of fertilisers, agricultural training programmes and thirty Moroccan scholarships for Surinamese were among the topics discussed.
Minister Melvin Bouva of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Cooperation (Buza) held talks with his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita in New York on 25 September. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly, the ministry reported in a statement on 29 September.
The ministers discussed the progress of the cooperation agenda for 2026–2028. Bouva stressed that the cooperation must deliver concrete results. He called attention to agricultural training programmes, mapping soil fertility and the exchange of expertise.
Fertilisers and agricultural training
Bouva expressed his appreciation for Moroccan support for Surinamese agriculture, including a donation of fertiliser. The ministers also discussed options for supplying more fertilisers at favourable prices, in support of agricultural production. The ministry did not disclose further details on the volume, prices or timeframe of any new deliveries.
Starting with ten students discussed
In the area of education, the thirty scholarships allocated by Morocco were central. The ministers discussed starting with ten students and the practical conditions for their participation. It was not stated when the students could begin or how they would be selected.
Bouva further raised cooperation in renewable energy and diplomatic training programmes. The ministers also exchanged views on developments within the United Nations and relations between Africa and the Caribbean region.
In addition, both countries want to use sport to strengthen mutual contacts and exchanges. The ministry cites sports diplomacy as part of the cooperation, but has not yet announced any concrete sports projects.
