Suriname has retained its Tier 1 status in the Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report of the United States Department of State. This was announced by the Ministry of Justice and Security in a statement on Thursday, October 8. Minister Harish Monorath emphasises that the recognition is reason to further strengthen the fight against human trafficking.
The TIP report assesses countries’ efforts to combat human trafficking. This includes the detection and prosecution of perpetrators, the protection and support of victims, and the prevention of human trafficking.
Monorath expresses his appreciation for the individuals and organisations that contribute to addressing human trafficking and migrant smuggling despite existing challenges. He particularly thanks the United States Embassy for its support.
On behalf of the government, the minister congratulates Surinamese society on retaining the status. According to him, however, the recognition is no reason to sit back. Joint efforts must be continued and strengthened.
Resources and victim care remain points of attention
According to the ministry, sufficient resources, the training of relevant officials, and the timely identification and referral of victims remain important points of attention. The effective implementation of national policy also requires continued attention.
Monorath will shortly receive the Trafficking in Persons Unit and the TIP working group. During that meeting, the results achieved, existing challenges and recommendations from the report will be evaluated.
The ministry will announce further information at a later date on the findings and follow-up steps.
