PLO bus april 2016 web 6 The Ministry of Transport is conducting stricter checks on bus drivers and bus operators because of dangerous driving behaviour, with possible sanctions up to the revocation of licences and driver cards.

The Ministry of Transport, Communication and Tourism (TCT) has announced stricter checks on compliance with traffic rules and permit conditions in public transport.

Bus owners and drivers who violate the rules may face legal measures. Where provided for by law, violations may also affect their permit or driver’s card.

In a press release dated October 5, the ministry states that it has noted with concern that drivers do not always comply with the applicable rules in traffic. It mentions dangerous overtaking, speeding and ignoring traffic rules and traffic signs, among other things.

According to TCT, reckless driving endangers drivers and passengers as well as other road users. The ministry emphasises that bus owners and drivers bear major responsibility because they transport people daily.

Through the Transport Directorate, the ministry will work with the police and other relevant bodies to exercise stricter oversight of public transport operations. According to TCT, the traffic police check compliance with traffic rules daily and take action in the event of violations.

The ministry will also take measures within its legal powers. Which measures are taken depends on the nature and seriousness of the violation. Administrative or other legal measures may be imposed.

TCT calls on bus owners and drivers to behave responsibly and professionally. According to the ministry, possession of a permit or driver’s card does not exempt them from the obligation to comply with traffic rules and permit conditions. The ministry also asks the sector to hold one another accountable for irresponsible driving behaviour and jointly contribute to safe public transport.
