Twenty people from the Maroon community were honoured on Sunday, 4 October, for their contribution to Surinamese society. The tribute took place during the closing of the first Maroon Legacy Wi Rutu fair at Roeli’s Event Venue in Magenta.
Those honoured include entrepreneurs, musicians and people who have distinguished themselves in social, educational and community fields. The Ministry of Regional Development (RO) aims to use the recognition to draw attention to their commitment to the development of the Maroon community and Suriname.
The two-day fair was part of Maroon Legacy Month, held from 18 September through 10 October under the theme ‘Maroon Legacy Wi Rutu’. In addition to history, culture and traditions, entrepreneurship and sustainable development are central to the activities.
Committee chair Minanga Hertsberg looks back positively on the first edition. According to her, the organisation gained valuable experience. Points for attention and improvement will be included in preparations for a next fair. The organisation also wants more people to be eligible for recognition in the future.
The ministry considers the first fair a trial edition and intends to organise the event annually. This should create a permanent platform for culture, entrepreneurship, social recognition and development. Maroon Legacy Month concludes on 10 October, Day of the Marrons.
