Ukraine carried out a large-scale drone attack on the Moscow region on Sunday. According to Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, around 450 drones flying towards the capital were shot down. A major oil refinery and a residential building, among other sites, were hit.
According to Governor Andrei Vorobyev, at least two people were killed and 20 others injured. In Sofyino, a 44-year-old woman was killed after a drone struck a three-storey building. Five people, including two children, were injured. In the Orekhovo-Zuevo district, an elderly man was killed after a home was hit.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Ukraine had attacked a major Russian oil facility and a logistics centre with drones and missiles. According to Ukrainian military officials, three key components at the refinery were damaged. According to Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence, the facility supplies more than a third of the Moscow region’s fuel needs.
The attacks temporarily led to restrictions at Sheremetyevo and Vnukovo airports. These were lifted on Sunday morning, but travellers were warned of possible delays.
Ukraine was also hit by Russian attacks on Saturday. According to Ukrainian authorities, nine people were killed in the Kyiv and Sumy regions, including three children. In Fastiv, a mother and her two young children were killed. In the Sumy region, four people were killed when a Russian drone struck their car.
In Kherson, a monastery was hit, killing a clergyman and injuring four others.
Russia and Ukraine have stepped up their attacks over the past week, targeting energy facilities, transport sites and logistics centres, among other locations. This is despite an earlier statement by US President Donald Trump that both countries had agreed not to attack energy infrastructure.
Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
