Fernald officially begins work as Surinamese ambassador to Guyana

During the subsequent bilateral meeting, Fernald and Ali discussed further strengthening cooperation between the two neighbouring countries. According to Suriname’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Business and International Cooperation, the Guyanese president emphasised the special diplomatic relationship between Suriname and Guyana.

Although challenges also exist within the bilateral relationship, Ali sees scope, according to the ministry, to continue working jointly on regional integration. Guyana also wants to devote more attention to cultural cooperation and contacts between citizens of both countries.

On behalf of Suriname, Fernald pointed to the importance of a broad cooperation agenda. Food security, logistics, connectivity, oil and gas, and investment in human capital were identified as key sectors. Education, the labour market, and the deployment and development of skilled workers were also discussed.

Joint approach to carbon credits

During the meeting, Suriname also proposed that both countries cooperate more closely in the area of climate finance. Given the extensive tropical rainforests of Suriname and Guyana, the countries should jointly act on the international market for carbon credits, according to Suriname’s position.

President Ali responded positively to the proposal and pointed to the Global Biodiversity Alliance (GBA). He called for the initiative to be signed as a further elaboration of cooperation between the two countries.

Fernald was accompanied during the presentation of his credentials by diplomats Melinda Reijme and Lucill Starke-Esajas.

Prior to the ceremony with the Guyanese president, the Surinamese ambassador was received by the Guyanese Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
