Police officers from Groningen police station went to the location following a telephone report, where they found the man lying motionless along the road. Initially, it was suspected that he was under the influence of alcohol.
The man’s sister, identified by the initials R.R., was informed. When she arrived at the scene some time later and called out to her brother, he did not respond. A doctor who was called in subsequently officially pronounced him dead.
The preliminary police investigation shows that earlier that day, at around 11 a.m., the man had consumed alcohol with others at a shop in Huwelijkzorg. Between 3 p.m. and 3.30 p.m., he was still seen lying in the roadside verge along the Gangarampandayweg.
According to police, passers-by paid no particular attention to the situation because the man was often lying in that location under the influence of alcohol.
Injuries raise questions
Several injuries were found during an external examination of the body. Investigators also observed a ring-shaped scar around the neck area.
These findings have led police to suspect that a crime may have been involved. The exact cause of death has not yet been established.
Forensic Investigation officers conducted an investigation at the location. The body was then transferred by a funeral company to the mortuary of the Academisch Ziekenhuis Paramaribo (AZP).
On the instructions of the Openbaar Ministerie (Public Prosecution Service), the body has been seized for further investigation. Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances under which the man died.
