Meerzorg police seized several mopeds over the past weekend after officers came across an illegal street race during a patrol. The race took place on the Hadji Iding Soemitaweg, near plantation Bitterzorg. According to police, a group of young people had gathered along the road while mopeds were racing on the public road. Officers put an end to the race and checked the mopeds present.
A number of vehicles did not meet legal requirements and were seized for reinspection. A towing service transported the mopeds to the impound lot.
Police are warning young moped riders in particular not to take part in illegal races. Such races not only endanger participants, but also pose a serious threat to other road users. Parents and guardians are also being urged to take responsibility and make young people aware of the possible consequences of dangerous driving behaviour on public roads.
