An 18-year-old moped rider was seriously injured on Saturday evening in a collision at the intersection of René de Rooystraat and Baas Adriaanstraat in Wanica. The motorist drove away after the accident, but was later arrested and remanded in custody.
From the preliminary police investigation, it appears that the moped rider, O.P., was travelling along Baas Adriaanstraat from the direction of Bhikarie Manorathstraat towards Sophia’s Lustweg. A white Toyota Carina, driven by 40-year-old A.J., was approaching from the opposite direction. Near René de Rooystraat, the motorist turned right, thereby crossing the moped rider’s path. The moped subsequently collided with the passenger car.
O.P. sustained several injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Emergency Department of Academisch Ziekenhuis Paramaribo. He was admitted for treatment.
According to police, further investigation showed that A.J. does not have a driver’s licence. He was also under the influence of alcohol to such an extent that he was deemed unable to operate the vehicle properly.
The motorist is said to have driven away after the collision, leaving the seriously injured victim without assistance. He was subsequently arrested and, after consultation with the Openbaar Ministerie (Public Prosecution Service), remanded in custody.
The moped and the Toyota Carina have been seized for further investigation. The Verkeer Midden department is continuing its investigation into the case.
