A 21-year-old suspect was injured on Tuesday morning, September 15, after police fired at him during a pursuit32 in Para. According to police, the man drove a moped into an officer after he was ordered several times to stop.

The Zanderij police received a report at around 3.50 a.m. that two mopeds had been stolen in Matta. The suspected perpetrators were said to have ridden the mopeds in the direction of Zanderij.

Officers launched an investigation and spotted two men near the centre. They were ordered to stop and initially complied.

During the check, one of the suspects suddenly sped away in the direction of Wit Santi, according to police. The second man fled into the forest.

The police continued the pursuit of the moped rider and encountered him again in the vicinity of Luchthavenlaan.

According to police, the suspect ignored several orders to stop and then drove into a police officer. An officer first fired a warning shot, but the man allegedly continued his escape.

Police then fired at him. The suspect, C.N. (21), was hit in his upper right thigh. He was taken by ambulance to hospital for medical treatment and remains there under police guard.

In addition to the two stolen mopeds, police found a brushcutter, a chainsaw and a backpack with the suspects. The bag contained, among other items, tools, silver jewellery, a moped cover and a machete. The items were seized by police.

The second suspect managed to escape and is still being sought. The Recherche Regio Midden investigative department is handling the further investigation.
