OPENBAAR MINISTERIE ADVOCAAT RECHTER VONNIS 3 Prosecutor General Garcia Paragsingh confirms fines of up to SRD 10,000 for environmental violations such as illegal waste dumping and placing car wrecks on verges. The rules are now officially in force.

Attorney General Garcia Paragsingh ratified the official fine schedule for environmental violations on Tuesday, September 15. Depending on the violation, a fine of up to SRD 10,000 may be imposed.

The fine schedule concerns violations included in the Politiestrafwet and the Criminal Code. These include the illegal dumping or burning of waste, inadequate maintenance of plots and road verges, and placing car wrecks or other obstacles on verges.

For the illegal dumping of rubbish and waste, depending on the quantity, a fine of between SRD 1,000 and SRD 10,000 applies. The fine for failing to maintain a plot also ranges from SRD 1,000 to SRD 10,000. The amount is determined on the basis of the surface area of the site.

Failure to maintain the road verge along a plot is punishable by SRD 1,000. The same amount applies to the burning of household and garden waste. Anyone who places a car wreck, parts of dismantled vehicles or other obstacles on a verge risks a fine of SRD 3,500.

The full fine schedule for environmental violations has been published on the website of the Openbaar Ministerie (Public Prosecution Service). The OM calls on the public to comply with the legal regulations and contribute to a clean, healthy and safe living environment.
