kaars web 3 A driver has died after a severe collision with a concrete electricity pole on Wayamboweg in Saramacca. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
A motorist was killed on Sunday evening, 25 October 2026, in a serious traffic accident on Wayamboweg, near building number 104 in the district of Saramacca. The victim was driving a van that left the road and crashed with great force into a concrete electricity pole. The identity of the deceased man has not yet been officially established.

Preliminary police investigations show that the driver, believed to be named Sibrion, was travelling along Wayamboweg from the direction of Vijfde Rijweg. For an as yet unknown reason, he lost control of the vehicle, after which the van left the carriageway and ended up on the southern verge.

The vehicle then collided head-on with a concrete pole of Energiebedrijven Suriname (EBS, Suriname’s electricity company). The impact was so severe that the pole broke in two and landed on the bonnet of the van.

The driver was found about eight metres from the vehicle. He had sustained serious injuries to his head and face and died at the scene. A doctor who was called in officially pronounced him dead.

Search for possible occupants yields nothing

As there was initially uncertainty about the presence of other occupants, the surrounding area was searched. However, no other victims were found during the search.

Police in Jarikaba called in the Forensische Opsporing (FO, Forensic Investigation Department) to secure evidence and investigate the circumstances of the accident. The heavily damaged vehicle has been seized for further investigation.

The body of the deceased man was transported by a funeral company to the mortuary of the Academisch Ziekenhuis Paramaribo (AZP).

Police seek relatives of victim

The identity of the victim has so far not been officially established. Police are therefore calling on relatives and other persons who may recognise or know the deceased man to contact the Jarikaba police station. The investigation into the exact cause of the traffic accident is continuing by police in Jarikaba.
